Did you know that America needs truck drivers? The American Trucking Association has estimated that for-hire trucking companies have nearly 50,000 fewer drivers than they need…and it is expected to worsen in the years to come. ATA largely blames the grueling demands of a job that puts workers on the road for long periods, for little pay, quickly leading to driver burn out.
That is why it is so important that we here at Local 294 fight every day to ensure that our members have the wages, benefits and retirement security they deserve. Good solid contracts are a win-win for both the employer and employee by providing an improved standard of living for the worker and reducing turnover and expenses for the employer.
With that in mind, now is the time for us to tell our congressional leaders to block and resist low-wage “right to work” laws. These laws fight against worker safety, the right to organize and higher wages. Low-wage laws hurt everyone. In states where these laws are in place, workers earn $6,000 less per year, regardless of whether they are in a union or not. Local 294 continues to remain vigilant in holding our elected officials accountable for their actions and demand they look out for our interests and not succumb to the pressure and greed of these big money, anti-union groups whose agenda and goal is to strip you of your rights and lower your standard of living.
On a lighter note…Spring is on its way and after a long harsh winter, I am sure you are as anxious as I am for some nicer weather! Spring is the time of year that we get to enjoy our Teamsters Local 294 Golf Scramble. Proceeds from this event benefit our Local 294 Teamster Care program. This is always a great way for our members to spend some time together outside of the workplace while raising money for a great cause. Look inside for details.
Also, if you have a child/dependent who is a senior in high school this year, take some time to look into our Teamsters Local 294 Scholarship program application included in this edition. I have always felt that by awarding these funds, we are saying “We’re behind you.” These scholarships provide students the financial assistance and community support they need to attend college and pursue their dreams.
As always, I’d like to take the time to thank you for your continued support. Best wishes for a safe and healthy summer!
